The FAFSA Gates Are Open…Time To Get To Work

November 26, 2024

The beta testing phase for the 2025-26 FAFSA has concluded, and the form is now widely available for all students and families. Here's how you can begin the filing process:

  1. Go to studentaid.gov, the official website for filing the FAFSA.
  2. Create a gov account if you haven't already. Each contributor (you, your spouse, if applicable, and your parents if you're a dependent student) will need their own account.
  3. Gather the necessary documents before starting:
    1. Your Social Security number and driver's license
    2. Your 2023 federal income tax returns and W-2s
    3. Records of untaxed income
    4. Current bank statements and investment records
    5. List of schools you're interested in attending (you can list up to 20)
  4. Start the 2025-26 FAFSA application on the gov website.
  5. Complete each section carefully, using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically transfer your federal tax information, if possible.
  6. Review your application thoroughly before submitting.
  7. Sign and submit the form electronically using your FSA ID.

Remember, the deadline for the 2025-26 FAFSA is June 30, 2026, but it's best to submit as early as possible since some aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, be sure to check for any additional deadlines set by your state or the schools you're applying to, as these may be earlier than the federal deadline.
